How to Maintain Your Front & Exterior Doors
It is often said that your front door is a true reflection of your home. It welcomes visitors, shields your family from rain, wind, and snow, and keeps your home secure.
Despite the important role your exterior doors play, many homeowners overlook them, and they rarely get maintained or even occasionally checked. Just like any part of your home, your front and exterior doors need some maintenance to ensure they are able to do their job properly.
Euroseal has put together a brief guide that will give homeowners greater confidence in their exterior doors with easy-to-follow tips on keeping them in great condition.
Cleaning Tips
Cleaning is an excellent way to preserve your door’s quality, as well as maintain the appearance of your home.
Just like windows, you should try to clean your exterior doors once every several months or twice a year. Exterior doors, like our steel doors, are very resilient against dirt, water and snow. However, they do benefit from a cleaning as trapped dirt and dust can be unsightly and gradually cause long-term damage to the door and its hinges. As a bonus, cleaning your exterior door also helps make your home the presentable property it deserves to be.
When cleaning your door, keep some of these tips in mind:
- Use a gentle cleaning agent such as dish soap or mild detergent.
- Stay away from metal scourers or abrasive cleaning tools.
- Use small amounts of water from a bucket or container rather than spraying it with a hose.
Given the subzero temperatures in southern Ontario during the winter months, it is better to clean your doors during dry, warm weather in spring or summer. Moisture lingers in cooler weather and can easily get trapped inside the glass of your door.
General Exterior Door Maintenance
As well as cleaning your doors, you should also keep an eye out for any signs of damage. Doing so will reduce the need for an exterior door replacement. You should typically inspect your exterior door once every few months as this is an easy way to spot potential problems before they get worse. The most vulnerable areas to pay particular attention to are the frame and any glass inside your exterior door.
Inspect the Frame
The frame is one of the areas of your door that is most prone to damage, especially from overuse. Check for cracks around the edges of your door. If your door is made from steel or any other metal, it is less likely to have cracks than traditional wooden ones. It may however be causing damage to the frame – especially if it was not fitted properly by exterior door professionals.
Check the Glass
Some exterior doors have a small area of glass for added visibility. As well as cleaning this area, it is a good idea to check it also for chips or cracks. Chipped or cracked glass can shatter due to severe weather conditions or if the door is slammed, posing a safety risk to you and your family.
