Vinyl windows are a low-cost, low-maintenance replacement for old or broken windows in your home. With a range of window styles available including single slider, bay and bow, and awning, you can easily replace any windows in your home with vinyl windows.
One of the greatest advantages of vinyl windows is that they require very little upkeep. They come already finished, they require little cleaning, and you will never need to paint them as their colour remains vibrant forever.
When it comes to cleaning and maintaining vinyl windows, there are a few do’s and don’ts. You should be aware of these tips, so that your vinyl windows remain in very good condition for a long time. We have summarized the best ways to clean and maintain your vinyl windows. Keep on reading to find out more!
It is best to clean your vinyl windows a couple of times a year to keep them in good working order, for as long as possible. When cleaning vinyl windows, you should always use mild soaps, (like a dish soap used sparingly) with a soft cloth. Move the cloth in circular motions to clear away any dirt and grime.
For tough stains on your vinyl windows, you can use very diluted bleach (about 4 cups of water and 1 cup of bleach) and apply as you would a detergent. Rinse the bleach away thoroughly with clean water.
For the interior of your vinyl window, you can use water-based cleaners like Windex and Lysol. Spray a small amount onto the window and ensure you wipe away thoroughly with a cloth.
For a natural cleaner, you can use diluted vinegar on your vinyl windows. Mix one-half cup of vinegar with three cups of water and, moving in a circular motion, use a cloth to remove dirt.
Ensure you always use a soft cloth to clean your vinyl windows and do not scrub too hard, as this could damage the surface of the vinyl.
Cleaning vinyl windows always calls for soft, gentle, and diluted cleaners. Any kind of aggressive cleaning product needs to be kept far from your vinyl windows. Harsh and aggressive solvents and cleaners will damage the surface of the vinyl and could lead to a shortened lifespan for your windows.
Aggressive cleaners to avoid include undiluted chlorine bleach, nail polish remover, and liquid grease remover. Abrasive cleaners, like Ajax and bathtub cleaners, should also be avoided as these too will damage the surface of the vinyl.
You should never use anything sharp or abrasive to scrub the windows, like steel wool or razor blades – no matter how tough the stain. You should also avoid cleaning your windows in extreme temperatures. If it’s too hot, the cleaners will leave a soapy residue behind as they dry quickly. If it’s too cold, you could end up with a streaky surface.
One of the best ways to maintain your vinyl windows is to clean thoroughly and often. Make sure to clean the frames a few times a year and the windows every few months. The exterior frames should be done on occasion too – at least a few times a year.
You should also aim to keep the tracks of your vinyl windows clear, as dirt and dust can build up over time. Unclean tracks can put pressure on the window, impair its energy efficiency, and cause hinges and rollers to wear out more quickly.
Additionally, keeping the hardware of the window (i.e. the hinges, rollers, and latches) lubricated with a silicone-based lubricant, can ensure they remain in good working condition.
