Your windows do a lot to make a house become a home. In fact, they provide both benefits to your home’s design and your own health. For example, not only does the style of your windows complement your home’s architecture, but they also allow plenty of natural and mood-lifting light to enter your home.
Because of these benefits, it is important to choose a type of window that truly reflects your home’s character. In today’s post, Euroseal Windows & Doors is looking at Awning Windows and whether or not you should consider them for your home.
Awning windows are a type of window that opens from the bottom, rather than the side or top of the frame. As they open, they create a type of covering (known as an awning) that protects the opening from rain or other types of weather. Despite having a different function though, awning windows are made just like many other types of windows.
To make an awning window, the manufacturer sets the dimensions for the window, this is really important if you are looking for replacement windows that need to fit a precise space in your walls. It is also one of the reasons why it is best to contact a window manufacturer directly – as they are able to craft the windows exactly to your home’s needs.
Once the dimensions are set, the glass is cut to fit them. It is then given a thorough clean with a high-pressure cleaner. Window manufacturers take special care when cleaning glass windows with high pressure washers because they can crack or break. This is why homeowners are not advised to do so without taking extra precautions.
After being cleaned, the panes of glass are fitted together to form a double-glazed or triple-glazed window. They are also attached to a frame. Window frames come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and materials. The most common material for window frames is vinyl due to the combination of energy efficiency, very low maintenance and cost effectiveness.
Now, how does a window become an awning window? Whereas typical windows like casement windows are framed and fitted to open sideways, awning windows do not. Instead, an awning window will have a handle at the bottom of the window for it to be opened outwards.
Awning windows get their name directly from awnings, a type of covering that appears on buildings and creates shelter from the sun or the rain. Being transparent though, awning windows do not block light from entering a home. But because they open from the bottom of the frame, they do reduce the amount of rain that could enter your home, especially since rain tends to fall at an angle from the wind.
While other types of windows tend to open fully, awning windows can be gently opened at a smaller angle without taking up too much space on the interior and exterior of your home. This makes them ideal for ventilating areas of the home that you might want to keep private, such as bathrooms. Awning windows angular opening from the bottom also makes them perfect for windows that need to be small or compact.
Because they shield your home against anything entering from above and help keep air flowing, awning windows are best suited for basements, kitchens or bathrooms.
