Your windows are an important element of your home. Not only do they let healthy natural light into your home, but they also increase air circulation when opened. Despite being an essential asset to a home, many homeowners do not know how their windows are made. While some older houses in Ontario still have wooden windows, the majority of newer homes and apartments utilize a type of window known as vinyl windows.
In this post, Euroseal Windows & Doors will be looking at what vinyl windows are and how they are made.
Vinyl windows are windows made out of a plastic material. They are a common alternative to traditional wood windows as they are much more affordable and do not require extra care like painting. In addition, vinyl windows offer excellent insulation properties which make them perfect for reducing energy consumption and lowering utility bills. Because of these significant benefits, vinyl windows are nearly universal in new homes and buildings across Ontario and Canada.
Despite its name, the material required to make a vinyl window is not simply vinyl. Vinyl windows actually get their name from a type of polymer known as polyvinyl chloride (PVC). This versatile chemical compound is used in many different products across your home, including pipes, fashion, packaging and even cars.
To manufacture a vinyl window, the materials must first be assembled and fitted.
Vinyl window manufacturers begin by cutting the vinyl into slats. These slats are heated and fused together to create the window frame. Additional trimming is also done to ensure the frame is smooth and aesthetically pleasing.
Spacers are then installed onto the frame alongside sealants. Spacers are metallic or plastic placer bars that hold the glass together, while sealants or caulks seal the window together and improve its insulation. A window screen is then fitted with sashes, which will allow parts of the window to be safely opened once installed. The number of sashes depends on the type of window. For example, two sashes are given to double-hung windows.
Once the frame and any remaining hardware has been installed, the glass is inserted inside and sealed. Window manufacturers take extra care to ensure the glass is clean and free from marks like fingerprints, otherwise the entire window will be permanently marked. Extra products are also added so that no moisture lingers on the inside of the window and causes fogging.
Now that the windows are manufactured, they are ready to be fitted and installed by a skilled professional.
