Exterior doors are pretty complex. While you may see something relatively simple that allows you to gain access to your home, anyone who knows the components of an exterior door will tell you that not all is quite as it seems.
Understanding the anatomy of a door is actually very beneficial to your home. It can help you diagnose functional issues and allow you to better communicate with your repair/replacement company, secure your home more effectively and choose a door style that fits your needs.
Your door isn’t just an entry and exit way, it’s also your ‘guardsman’, so ensuring you have a fully functional door that is in working order is critical. To help you gain a more comprehensive understanding of your door, we’ve compiled this quick guide to the components of an exterior door.
The doorway is the opening you walk in to enter or exit your home.
Your door frame is the support behind your door and has multiple elements to it. These are known as the head, jamb and sill. This is usually made of a material like aluminum or steel to help keep the door frame strong.
The door head is the horizontal part of the frame that is at the top of your door.
Your door panel is the section that moves to open and close. This is the main part of your door.
Similar to the door head, only vertical. The door jamb runs vertically to the side of the door and is the longest part of the door.
The sill sits at the bottom of the frame and is against the floor.
The threshold protects your home against winter chill and water by providing a slightly sloped protective element between the door and the floor.
The stile is important to housing the lock, hinges and latches of your door. These are pieces of hardware that are on the outside of both sides of a door.
The hinge is what enables the door to swing in and out. These are typically two pieces of hardware and can be barrels, pivots and concealed hinges.
Brickmould is a type of trim on the outside of the door. Brickmould ensures there is no gap between the door frame and the wall. This is a critical element to ensure there is no water or damp damage to the inside of the house.
Anyone living in particularly cold climates will know all about weatherstripping. This is a type of material that runs along the bottom of a door and keeps the heat in and the wind and bugs out.
Similar to the weatherstripping, the door sweep reinforces this closure and lies against the threshold.
Glazing refers to the small little bits of glass or windows inside the door. This allows a little natural light into your entryway and is typically a stylistic option.
It’s important to note that the style of your door can play a significant part in the types of components that are present in your door. Here are some other components that your door might have depending on the style:
