What is the Canada Greener Homes Grant & How Does it Work

What Is the Canada Greener Homes Grant?

Launched this year, the grant allows homeowners to make energy-efficient home construction and upgrades.

The goal of the grant is to help around 700,000 Canadian homeowners reduce energy costs. This will also help homeowners to save on bills as well as keep their home warm in winter and cool in summer.

Who Can Get the Grant?

You will need to be a homeowner to be eligible for the grant and have proof of ownership.

Properties eligible for the Canada Greener Homes Grant include:

  • Single and semi-detached houses
  • Townhouses
  • Cottages
  • Mobile homes on a permanent foundation
  • Row homes
  • Permanently moored floating homes (houseboats)

It also includes small multi-unit residential buildings, as long as they are three stories or less. Do keep in mind though, if your home is less than six months old it is exempt from the grant.

Can I Use the Grant for Energy-Efficient Upgrades?

Yes. The purpose of the Canada Greener Homes Grant is to make your home as energy-efficient as possible.

Those eligible may make more than one upgrade to their home, depending on its cost. These upgrades include energy-efficient window replacements, adding insulation, and improving heating and cooling systems. Attaching solar panels and installing smart thermostats are also eligible upgrades.

How Much is the Greener Homes Grant?

To be eligible for the Canada Greener Homes Grant, you must first register through the online portal. Up to 700,000 grants are available, so you will need to get in fast.

As part of the application process, you will need to supply a number of documents. These include:

  • Proof of ownership
  • Property tax bill number
  • Proof that property is your primary residence (utility bill or Government-issued ID)

Next, you will need to register and book your pre-retrofit evaluation. Then, document and complete your home retrofits. After that, book your post-retrofit evaluation and apply for reimbursement.
